Artist's Statement
on
Landscapes
Years ago, I had the opportunity to ask an architect, who designs housing developments, why take beautiful meadows and bull-doze them to rubble: why not simply integrate the new houses into the natural beauty of the existing landscape? She paused then replied that she would have to go look at the properties in order to do that, when all that she really needs to work with is in the surveyor reports.
My landscape paintings reflect this process of constructing environments based purely on abstract compositions of lines and circles. My landscapes exist outside the parameters of a normally functioning eco system that would usually determine what things look like in a landscape. In my work, as in the suburbs, nature exists only as it fits into my design.
